Our story

From local general practice to the Supreme Court.

Friels was established in 1979 by brothers Joseph and Thomas Friel, taking over law offices in Uddingston and Coatbridge where we continue to practise today.

The firm began with a modest clientele, doing general practice work for local communities. It grew quickly to take on complex Civil Court work and prominent High Court criminal trials, and two of our solicitors have gone on to become Sheriffs.

By the 1980s we were advising companies on commercial matters, and our civil cases have gone all the way to the Supreme Court. Through it all, we have kept a dedicated service for the people of Uddingston and Coatbridge, with an outreach all over Scotland.

Donnelly v Royal Bank of Scotland plc

The bank fought the case to the Supreme Court and lost. The court held that discharge from a Trust Deed discharges the debtor completely.

Royal Bank of Scotland plc v Donnelly

The bank's separate attempt to undo the discharge failed: reduction is an equitable remedy, and it would not have been equitable here.

Bank of Scotland v Smith

A case that opened a new chapter in civil and commercial law on the need for advice when signing a document.
